Most of us do not fully see the reality of life. Instead we moan about our problems, our burdens and our difficulties as if life should be easy and a smooth path. I know about this moaning because I have done my share.
But does this moaning make life any better?
In the attempt to simplify life and ease its difficulties, we have resorted to an escapist mentality that preaches "life is what you make it". As if we have the power to steer its course. In numerous books and motivation material, we are lead to believe that one can have a smooth sailing; we just have to gear our thoughts and energy to becoming successful. Positive thinking they call it.
But this alone does not guarantee anything. I believe discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve life's problems. These tools are a means by which we experience the pains of life in such a way as to work them through and solve them, learning and growing in the process.
Discipline then lies in our ability to delay gratification, accepting our responsibilities, dedicate ourselves to the process of life and overall balance in our living. Our other ability to have discipline in the way we handle our finances, resources, manage our time, handle our relationships and how we embrace our character and personalities with the aim of building self discipline. Because as much as I would love to believe otherwise, discipline is the life jacket that can save us from drowning ourselves in the deep sorrows of life.
